College Fashionista: Plaid Chic

This article is part of a weekly segment with College Fashionista, an online guide to the latest in college fashion. Article by Celia Hubbard.

It’s not quite spring yet, so our mission this week: take winter style to a new level! How ‘bout some plaid to mix things up? From personal experience, I know how easy it is to get stuck in the black winter slump. Black jackets, black scarves, and black boots, oh my! Do we really have to wait for spring to roll around to bring back that color? In a dark sea of puffers and North Face jackets, this Fashionista makes a statement in her vintage red and blue plaid pea coat by moving away from the typical black winter jacket and instead donning something with a little more personality and color!

This week’s Fashionista was lucky enough to find her plaid jacket in a vintage shop in Paris for 40 euros, (wouldn’t it be amazing to jet off to Paris for a day of shopping!), but plaid can be found in many places this season on campus and off as well, especially on the runways of New York Fashion Week. Designers including Band of Outsiders, Theyskens’ Theory, and Thakoon all featured plaid pieces in their 2011 collections, taking men’s wear for women to a whole new level. Everyone has a plaid piece or two somewhere in their closet, so lets bring ‘em out!

To give your ensemble a plaid infusion, add some simple earmuffs to any black coat to achieve a subtle plaid look. Another great option is this Urban Renewal Vintage Plaid Campfire Blanket Wrap that can be worn with a caramel leather belt under a black or brown coat with a chunky scarf, similar to the one this Fashionista is wearing. Looking for something a little more neutral? A simple black and white car coat will achieve the same vintage feel that plaid has without straying too far from the darker winter color palette. If you are like me and have one too many coats, another way to plaid your outfit out is a with a classic Burberry Scarf like this one, or a plaid cashmere muffler in a deep red or blue to give your look a burst of color and warmth! Incorporating any plaid item into your outfit is a simple yet sophisticated way to give your outfit the heat it needs to get you noticed when you strut your stuff down Com Ave. Remember that this season, plaid is fab!
