Spring 2011: It’s Here, and It Needs New Clothes

Spring is finally here after what seems to have been a long, most horrid winter. I don’t know about you, but I’ve grown sick of wearing my coat every day, with nothing but browns, blacks and neutral winter colors underneath it. It’s time to pull out the spring fun-colored wardrobe, or even better, find a new one.

If you’re looking to buy just a couple new spring items, have no fear. Throughout my travels to retail stores in the past few days, I realized that there are four main Spring 2011 trends to shoot for: shorts, basics, button downs and florals.

SHORTS

If retail store lineups are any indication, shorts have grown more prevalent than skirts and even dresses this spring. When it comes to men’s fashion, of course this is the case, but for some spring-loving dress-wearing gals, this is unfamiliar territory.

Luckily, shorts come in a variety of styles this spring, from “sailor” shorts to patterned shorts to denim. There are just as many options in this new major theme of spring than there are for skirts.

A couple of my favorites are these cuffed denim shorts from Urban Outfitters and these casual woven shorts from Forever 21.

BASICS

Sure, “Basics” is a bold statement. Anything can be considered a basic when it comes down to it. However, when I say basics, I mean the very basic spring items you can think of: a navy tank top, a loose fitting cream t-shirt. These solid, clean-cut tops can be mixed and matched with almost anything.

Every now and then a screen-printed t-shirt or two might get thrown into the mix, and yes, I believe these are basics as well! Spring 2011 is a time for the simple things. Thought about throwing out that plain coral tank top that you never wear? Think again! Items like this are perfect for this spring.

Forever 21 has this wide-sleeve stripe top for just $17.80 that would make a wonderful addition to your new Spring 2011 wardrobe.

BUTTON DOWNS

They’re everywhere, and they’re amazing. I am absolutely in love with them, and they have never been easier to find. Casual or formal, button downs come in all shapes and sizes and there’s no possible way I will ever get tired of them. When I saw them all over the shelves of my favorite retailers, I was super excited. No other top comes in so many different varieties. Short sleeve, long, three quarter, patterned, plaid, or striped, button downs have it all. Stock up on them. Get three, five, 50, or 100! Button downs are one of the best items of clothing to own this spring – they can be worn with shorts, skirts, or pants on days that are a bit colder. Luckily, they are everywhere and they are more than ready to be worn.

If you don’t own a button down you particularly favor quite yet, have no fear. Not only are they all over retail stores, but they can be found at thrift stores, too. But, if you demand a button down that’s brand new and all your own, this denim boyfriend button-down from Urban Outfitters is an excellent place to start. Don’t like denim? Try this champagne toned button down from Forever.

FLORALS

As they say, save the best for last. Nothing makes me happier than walking into a store and seeing what looks like fields of flowers everywhere. Sure, some people get sick of them, but unfortunately for those people, they are everywhere this spring.

Florals can be found on almost every form of clothing, even shorts and button downs. It is essential to have at least one floral dress is essential this spring, because, well, we all need something to run through fields of sunshine and rainbows with.  Florals can be found absolutely anywhere, and again, on anything. Though I tried rebelling against the blacks and neutrals during the winter months by wearing my floral romper, this left me nothing but freezing and wishing I was in my oversized sweater. I am more than ecstatic to pull out my current floral pieces and wear them proudly along with all the new ones I will soon purchase this spring.

If you haven’t grabbed your floral dress yet, this wildflower sundress from Urban is killer.

So there you have it – Spring 2011 trends in a nut shell. Pull out your florals, shorts, basics and button downs and be happy, tan and full of smiles that shine for miles in your new Spring 2011 clothes!
