Boston University’s chapter of Colleges Against Cancer hosted their first Pub Quiz Fundraiser on Saturday at the BU Pub. The Pub Quiz served as one of the only nights that guests under 21 are permitted entrance into the BU Pub, an near-legendary eatery among underage students who aren’t normally allowed in. Pub quiz participants enjoyed free nachos, and competed in trivia ranging from pop culture to facts about BU.

Colleges Against Cancer also hosts the annual BU Relay For Life event and offered free relay registration for teams attending the pub quiz. With a participant goal of 1,200 for this year’s Relay for Life, BU Colleges Against Cancer encourages teams to register early for the event. The pub quiz and the relay both work towards the organization’s goal to fundraise and raise awareness for cancer research in association with the American Cancer Society.

“Cancer is one of those things that will effect everyone in their lifetime, whether it’s to them or someone they know,” said BU Colleges Against Cancer Communications Officer and Relay For Life Co-Chair Lori Shah. “Cancer brings down a community and it’s an isolating disease, so it’s important to have a network to turn to.”

“I think that the pub quiz will serve as a bonding experience for [Relay for Life] teams,” said BU Colleges Against Cancer President and Relay For Life Co-Chair Sara Cathcart.

In addition to the pub quiz and relay, Colleges Against Cancer presents other cancer-awareness campaigns throughout the year focusing on specific issues, like lung cancer. The Great American Smokeout campaign last November encouraged people to quit smoking with a “Go Cold Turkey” turkey toss. The group also volunteers at the AstraZeneca Hope Lodge Center in Jamaica Plain.

BU’s 2011 Relay for Life will be held April 16-17 at the BU Track and Tennis Center. For more information about Relay for Life and Colleges Against Cancer visit www.relaybu.org or contact relaybu@gmail.com.
