Fun in the Berkshires

As the air starts to feel crisp and the leaves turn a beautiful golden hue, nothing would be better than enjoying autumn in the Berkshires. Located in western Massachusetts and accessible by car, bus or Amtrak, the Berkshires and its surrounding cities offer a perfect respite from the craziness of Boston. There is so much more to offer than pretty trees and rolling hills, however. Who knew one could go white water rafting and visit a modern art museum all in the same day? In an area of complete tranquility, here are some activities for every type of person.

The Foodie Robin’s Candy Shop

If you think you have seen a candy store, think again! Robin’s has not only your standard sweet fare, it’s got chocolate pasta! Although the shop is decorated with antique glass cabinets and crystal chandeliers reminiscent of the good old days, nothing feels outdated at this candy shop. Also, if you’re not a candy lover, Robin’s sells ice cream and gelato.

The Young at Heart Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden

Many of us college kids have fond memories of Dr. Seuss’ lovable books, and a trip to the sculpture garden would be the best tribute to Seuss himself. Located at the Springfield Museums, the garden and its bronze sculptures capture the joyful essence of Seuss, who was born and grew up in Springfield.

The Art Lover Mass MoCA

 

Housed in an old textile factory, this contemporary art museum contains both permanent installation and limited-time exhibitions. The museum is known for mixing performing with visual arts, and is abolsutely the place to be for any art history major or any contemporary art lover. There is also a children’s art section and cafe. Admission is $9 for students.

The Adrenaline Junkie – Six Flags

Need I say more about Six Flags? The theme park is well known for its wild roller coasters that will satisfy any daredevil. The park has different sections, such as Main Street USA and DC Superhero Adventures, which has one of the best steel roller coasters in the country, Bizarro. Even if you are not up for roller coasters, Six Flags does offer tamer rides.  General admission is $42.99.

The Nature Lover – Zoar Outdoor

White water rafting, zip lining, rock climbing, and kayaking are just a few of the activities at Zoar Outdoor. Located at the end of the Deerfield River, Zoar prides itself on being “The Northeast’s Leader in Outdoor Adventure!” If you want to try white water rafting, you must first check out important details, such as rafting day trips. If you have not tried zip lining before, here’s your best chance. They run a weekly special of $60 per person through November. There are also tons of beginner classes and even on-site lodging. This is a perfect way to spend a glorious fall day before the weather gets too cold.

Everyone loves a good deal. At Lee Outlets, you can find designer brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein and Banana Republic at discounted prices. Even better, the after-Thanksgiving sale opens at midnight and has items up to 50% off. Might as well start that Christmas shopping!

The History Buff – Hancock Shaker Village

Amid rolling hills and meadows lies the Hancock Shaker Village, which explores the lifestyle and religious practices of the Protestant sect. Here you can see how the traditional Shakers lived with demonstrations and special programs including sustainable gardening and hikes to the Shakers’ spiritual retreat on Mount Sinai. This time of year the village is accessible through guided tours at 1 pm on weekdays and 11 am and 1 pm weekends. Admission is $15.

The Stressed Out – Kripalu Center

If you’re in need of some serious R&R, Kripalu Center for yoga and health is the perfect escape. Since it’s a retreat, they offer classes that can range from two to five days and there is also on-site lodging. The Theater Geek – Shakespeare and Company

No matter the time of year, Shakespeare and Co has amazing Shakespeare plays. It was founded 30 years ago and sits on rolling a 30-acre campus. Currently, The Real Inspector Hound is playing, and the bill typically changes each month. If Shakespeare and/or theater is your passion, you will find no shortage of the spectacular at Shakespeare and Company.
